Salal’s New Visa Cards
Saturday, January 21st, 2012
Salal has exciting news! Coming February 2012, we will be rolling out a line of Visa credit cards, including a rich Visa Rewards card, a Visa Classic card, a Visa Student card and a Visa Secured card. In 2008, Salal sold its credit card portfolio to an outside vendor. In order to expand our offerings to our members, we’ve decided to let that contract conclude and launch our own Visa cards!
Our cards come with numerous benefits you won’t want to miss out on:
- Free, secure and simple account access. Track your spending, make a payment and monitor your account online, 24/7. For Visa Rewards card holders, redeem your points, 24/7, online!
- Overdraft protection for your Salal checking account
- Great rates, Salal’s exceptional personal service, and no annual fees!
If you have an existing Visa card with the Salal name and logo, there are some things you need to know: your card, your account number, rate, automatic payments, etc. are not affected as a result of this change. Your cards are still managed by the same company and will still be accepted, but when your current card expires, you’ll receive a new card that no longer bears the Salal name or logo. You will receive separate billing from Cardmember Service.
Stay tuned to salalcu.org for further details!
*Some restrictions apply. All Salal loans are subject to credit approval.

The last paragraph is a bit unclear, “when your current card expires, you’ll receive a new card that no longer bears the Salal name or logo. You will receive separate billing from Cardmember Service.” Does that mean that the card that I currently carry will still be in force, backed by the party that currently holds Salal’s CC Portfolio AND that Salal CU will issue me one of their own cards? In the end I will hev TWO valid Visa cards. One from Salal CU and one from Cardmember Services?
Sean,
I’m sorry the paragraph was unclear; thank you for the opportunity to clarify! Your current Salal-branded Visa card is still valid and managed by Cardmember Services. When that card expires, your replacement card will no longer bear the Salal name and logo. If you wish to have a Salal Visa card as well, you’ll need to appy for that separately when we launch the Visa program in February. Does that answer your question? If not, please feel free to ask another here on the blog, or you’re welcome to email me at news@salalcu.org. You can also call us at 800.562.5515 if we can give you more information.
Thank you for your question!
Shannon
Will the new Visa cards have computer chip technology?
Sylvia,
Great question, thank you for asking! Our new Visa cards will not have the computer chip technology at our February launch, but we’re looking into it to add in future, especially as the machines become more prevalent. All cards will be required to have that technology in the near future, so we’re definitely keeping an eye on the trends and doing the research.
Thanks again for a great question!
Shannon
The card I currently have, is a debit card. Will the new card be debit based or credit based? Will it support cash withdrawals from the ATMs on your branches?
I currently have a Visa card that is managed by Card Member Services. Will that change?
Lucinda,
Thank you for your questions. The new Visa cards will be credit cards, not debit cards. A member with our new credit card could get cash in the form of a cash advance at an ATM or branch; this would result in a credit card finance charge. I hope this answers your questions?
Thanks for posting!
Shannon
Rene,
Thanks for your question. No, your existing card will not change: you still have the same number and card management service. The only thing that will change is when your current card expires, your replacement card will not have the Salal logo or name on it. We hope that you’ll like the features and benefits of our new credit cards so much that you’ll want to open a new Salal card and even transfer your balance! One of the advantages of our new cards will be easy payments through our branches and online banking.
Thanks again for asking–I hope that helps!
Shannon
Hi,
It sounds like we will be able to pay towards our Visa balance via online transfers from a Salal checking account. Is this true? I hope so.
thanks,
Sarah
Sarah,
Thank you for asking. Yes, you are correct. Holders of a new Salal Visa card will be able to make payments on that card’s outstanding balance via online transfers from a Salal checking account.
Great question, thank you!
Shannon
I am very pleased to hear that you will again be administering your own visa card. I was not happy when it became Elan Financial Services. I will close that card and apply for new Salal card.
Sraddha,
We are very excited about our new line of Visa cards, and we think our members are going to really love them. Stay turned to salalcu.org and this blog, and we’ll let you know as soon as the cards are ready!
Thanks very much for your comment.

Thanks for sharing the info about the change from Elan to Salal’s own credit card. I’m glad you’re making the switch; however, I’m curious about the rewards program since I use it a lot. What will the rewards program be like? For example, will I be able to use my accumulated Visa points for travel anywhere? Thanks for your reply.
Catherine,
Thanks for your question, and it’s so nice to hear from you! Aren’t you sorry you missed Seattle’s “snowmageddon” last week?
Yes, you’ll be able to use rewards points for travel anywhere. This will include options such as travel discounts on airline tickets, tour packages and cruises. We think Salal Rewards Visa card holders will really enjoy the flexibility of the rewards program!
Thanks again and take care!
